Hm, they should stay with rugby I think... ;-)

Bonn Triathlon (didn't want to start, but it was league-race and the rest was ill either):

Gorgeous weather: Summer at 23° and sunshine.

3.8k swim in river Rhine. Start from ferry, nice. Shoulder didn't work at all, so just used the right arm. Out of the water after 25mins. Nice as well. :-)

60k bike ride through beautiful undulating landscape. Nice climbs, nice descents. Bl***y back started to hurt again after an hour.

15k run flat along the promenade. Running nearly impossible and it felt as nearly everybody overtook me. It was 4:28hrs in the end, half an hour more than predicted, which is nearly all on the run.

Appointment at the doctors today. We'll see...

But all in all a great race. If you ever come to Germany do a tour on a boat from Cologne to Ruedesheim and start at Bonn Triathlon the day after.

Sounds very nice. Did I miss something, 3.8 k in 25 min? :o Or was it a relay or something? God willing, I am doing a TT of 4 k Friday morning.

To Ashbarve, who swam 1.48 h. Very good indeed - you seem to have a very good aerobic capacity! :)

Thank you Magnus, for your kind words are an encouragement to me!
I've been swimming regularly for just one and a half years!
Tell me... is 1hr:48min for 4Km an "OK"ish time in a short course (25m) pool? For, the lifeguard at our pool who doubles up as a coach says... I should have to do it in less than 1hr:30min even on my first attempt!
going for a swim now after a 2 day forced break (pool was closed for cleaning). It's going to be fun... monsoon has hit Mumbai at last... its raining "cats and dogs"! Some respite from the sweltering heat. Pool should be nice and cool!

I think I had my best swim ever. I really tried to concentrate on the technique of Mr Smooth. I swam a constant 45 minutes and swam the last 300 yards in less than 5 minutes. Seemed good to me.

I don't know what are the rivers like up there in Finland, but river Rhine is quite fastish. ;-)

Especially with light flooding as on Sunday. As long as you go with the flow everything is ok. But as soon as you going to go sidewards you feel the force. It's amazing how fast it pushes you along and how hard it is, to go sidewards. A couple of people missed the exit and were collected by the support boats...

Ah, let him talk. Did he time every 100m? What are your normal times for 100, 400, 1000?

If it felt good it was good. Well done. :)

Hi Ashbarve,

first of all I need to say that there are several much more experienced (and FASTER) swimmers on this forum than me

so please, listen carefully what others tell you also! I would think that it is very good to be able to swim nearly 2 hrs without a break - not very many people do that. On the other hand I do think that you need to do some speedwork. The swimsmooth´s training advice has helped me, see link (CSS - that is Critical Swimming Speed and some suggestions for speed workouts)

http://www.swimsmooth.com/training.html

I am quite sure that your times will speed up if you follow the CSS - workouts. Good luck! :)

Summer Solstice Sunday Swim was a total success. 26 swimmers left the Coast Guard pier at about 10am, swam in front of Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Stanford University's Hopkins Marine Station and ended the swim at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove; 2 mi. (3.2km) in all.
Pacific Grove sits on the southern tip of Monterey Bay between Pebble Beach and the City of Monterey on the central coast of California, USA. The most beautiful place on earth - but the water is cold!

Hi guys!

Had a very nice OW swim in a lake yesterday morning, 8 am: 13 C in the air, 17 C in the water. One lap was about 700 m - did two with a short break in between :).

Planning to do an improvised triathlon next Saturday morning: 1 km OW swim - 40 km bike - 10 km run as a preparation for my 70.3 Ironman on 17.7.

Cheers,

Magnus

No he didn't "time" me... Bjoern, with so many people in the pool, non-competitive swimmers who are least likely to bring any kind of "attention" to the club are last on the priority list of these so called "lifeguards"! They, in the past have flatly refused "timing" citing some reason or the other, hence did not ask. But... as am fortunate to have guidance online from you guys, likewise I've got pool mates who take the timings for me on the pace clock!
I'll do the time trials in next week and post them.
My 100m timing is 2:14 (some sea cucumbers may be faster, definitely need speed work! ) was not at all all out (do I have to be "all out" whilst taking the timings?), but that was taken immediately after 1000m swim followed by 1 mins rest.
Yesterday had a swim after a week’s break, did my normal routine totalling around 2500m. One of the sets 1000m did it in 23:30 and the other set prior to that 1000m was a 400m which I did in 9:04 so can say these are my 1000m & 400m times for now!
Magnus, will definitely try to follow the swimsmooth CSS training tips... will keep everyone posted

Hi guys,

good to hear, Ashbarve, that you have plans for the future.

I had my triathlon preparation "own race" this morning starting 9 am, 1 km OW 17.00 min, 40 k 29.4 km/h /windy :( , 10 k 48.33. Happy with this, especially with the swim. Feel quite worn out now, rest day tomorrow.

Cheers,

3:10h for 1.5/42/10 @ 31°.

30min gentle swim. Shoulder didn't really hurt. Quite pleased with that after nearly a year without swimming. But definitely need a new, less restricting wetsuit. Bike was a nice and easy 1:21h. And the rest is silence. Back really started to hurt again round the 5k mark. Off to the Osteopath this week then.

Anyway, nice race, well organized: Big screen for the footie. :)

Well done, Bjoern. In Finnish we call it "sisu" when people have the guts to continue even if it is difficult!

Had a 4 x 400 CSS swim this morning (or tried to do that) :( It is not so easy to keep the rythm as there are more than 10 swimming in the fast lane, and less than a half is actually swimming fast... :?

Anyway, I digested it as a good preparation for a triathlon swim

Cheers, Magnus.

That's why i like races with single laps. It's more difficult to drop out somewhere on the course hwen you know you have to get back anyway... :D

Well done with your CSS. At least you've got a fast lane... ;)

I think I am starting to get it. There was this kid swimming next to me that was a fast swimmer, so it seemed to me. I swam next to him for 20 minutes concentrating on my hand entry straight out from the shoulder, the wrist stiff, the bend of the wrist and catch with the hand then pull back with a high elbow and I rotated. I am feeling it , I think. I could feel the water going in the opposite direction.

Brilliant. these are the moments I swim for. I love it, when it feels effortlessly, 'fast' and under control. :)

Rugged swim today!

Haven't done a lap in almost two years (I dislocated my shoulder last year) so I was definently hesitant! That sweet stench of chlorine brought back a flood of memories though :)

Hi Olivier!

Nice to hear that you are back in business. Not nice history with the shoulder  . However, in my youth I dislocated it three times in two yrs, after which it was operated. It took some time, but I became able to swim again. :)

This was many yrs ago, but now I am getting ready for my first 70.3 Ironman, in a week on Saturday.

Later,

My first 70.3 race is - as already noted ;) - on this coming Saturday, 17th of July in the midparts of Finland. It seems to be the day before the Roth Ironman...

For the time being we have a heatwave in Finland too (as in other parts of Europe  ), today close to 34 C was measured :o. Anyway, the former Ironman pro Pauli Kiuru (2nd in Hawaij in the 90s), has said that it is better to concentrate on those things you are able to influence rather than those you aren´t...

Had my last swim yesterday, 1000 m in 18.03 without killing myself. I was happy for that. :)

This morning I ran a quite hard 8.5 k on a very undulating path. Went out 6.30 already due to the heat - anyway it was 29 C in the sun 7.05...

Tuesday and Wednesday will be biking days, tues steady and wed easy.

Thursday rest, Friday 15 min bike and 15 min jog at location.

This is it. 8-)

Cheers,

Magnus

Sounds good, Magnus. Fingers crossed.

Been in the pool for the first time since April(?) and did ~10 laps. Shoulder is nearly allright again and hardly hurt. Chiropractic claims it's his success... :D
